Our school: Základná škola Štefana Koháriho II. s vyučovacím jazykom maďarským - II. Koháry István Alapiskola, Fiľakovo
Základná škola Štefana Koháriho II. s vyučovacím jazykom maďarským - II. Koháry István Alapiskola is a Primary School for the Hungarian minority in the town called Fiľakovo, situated in the south part of Central Slovakia. It is a public school with 600 pupils aged 7-15 and 50 qualified teachers. It is the largest school in the region. The language of the education is Hungarian. Being a central school, a lot of pupils commute from the nearby villages in order to receive a higher-standard basic education or because of the lack of local schools. The institution has 27 classes. According to its educational program the learning process is realized in 2 variants: model A for talented students' classes and model B for mixed ability classes. Integrated students learn according to their own adapted and customized curriculum. The school was built in 1964. It consists of 5 separate buildings (a building for elementary classrooms, a building for primary classrooms, a gym, a workshop and a day-care centre) which are situated in a large green area with playgrounds, sports grounds and a school garden. There are some vocational classrooms for Science, ICT and Languages (English and German). Town Fiľakovo and its region are located in a disadvantaged area because of a high unemployment rate. Almost half of the pupils come from socially disadvantaged families that live from lower incomes. These children receive free school meals and additional financial support to buy their required school equipment. Romany minority is also present in the region. Roma children get the same education, a special attention is turned to their school attendance. The management and the teachers of the school are willing to get involved in different projects. Last year the teachers worked in a European Union project “Modern World, Modern Life, Modern School“. From its grant they could equip the school with new technology. The school has also been collaborating with UNICEF Slovakia and as a result of this the institution was awarded as a "Child friendly school" in 2013 that is characterized as inclusive, healthy and protective for all children, effective with children, and involved with families and communities - and children. The institution would like to participate in the project because school partnerships can raise the inter-cultural competence and have a positive influence on everyday life at school. Pupils can improve their knowledge about modern technology, be skilled in ICT and Science. They become self confident and more motivated to learn English as well. The community can show its ability to work in teams, find and understand relations between the old and modern life. Technology is becoming more social, adaptive and customized, and as a result it can be an amazing teaching tool. Teachers can try innovative teaching methods and approaches like CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) lessons connected with the project in order to make the learning process more interesting. In the school syllabus Science and Technology are taught in reduced lesson quantities. Society needs more technical experts, that is why it is important to foster the students’ interest in Science and make them understand the world which is full of modern technology. The school has got relevant associated partners from the town, which will help in the realization of the project. All project activities will be supported by the town council. Other partners are the local museums and the library, the local educational institutions of similar character and particularly the local industries.
